Location: Turffontein

An Engineering / Fabrication / Manufacturing concern is seeking a QA / QC Line Inspector.

1. Role Purpose
To ensure the consistent execution of quality inspection protocols across the fabrication process, including visual, dimensional, and welding compliance inspections.
The QA/QC Line Inspector supports all ISO standards in the company IMS through real-time inspection, verification of fabrication quality, and enforcement of corrective actions to ensure product integrity prior to handover or dispatch.

2. Scope
This role applies to line-level QA/QC inspections throughout the fabrication and assembly value chain at the company. The role spans incoming material verification, in-process welding inspections, post-weld visual checks, and final acceptance sign-off in collaboration with internal and external inspectors.

4. Education & Training Requirements
a. Matric with Maths & Science
b. SAIW Level 1 or Level 2 certification advantageous
c. ISO 9001 Internal Auditor or ISO 3834 exposure advantageous
d. Basic NDT Level 1 exposure advantageous
e. Familiarity with welding standards such as ISO 5817, AWS D1.1, AWS D14.3, AWS B2.1

5. Knowledge & Experience
a. Minimum 2+ years in heavy fabrication QA/QC environment.
b. Understanding of welding and fabrication processes.
c. Basic knowledge of NDT methods and report interpretation.
d. Knowledge of welding symbols, joint configurations, and acceptance criteria.
e. Understanding of material traceability and certification requirements.
f. Familiarity with QA documentation such as WPS, PQR, welder qualifications, and MDRs.

Key Responsibilities

3.1. Visual & Dimensional Inspection
a. Conduct first-off, in-process, and final visual inspections of components in accordance with drawing tolerances and QA check sheets.
b. Verify material identification, traceability, and compliance with approved material certificates.
c. Use measuring instruments (tape, vernier, angle gauge, fillet weld gauge, etc.) to validate fabrication accuracy.
d. Detect and report any non-conformances in real time.

3.2. Welding Inspection & WPS Conformance
a. Ensure weld preparation, welding processes, and final welds conform to WPS and ISO 3834-2 requirements.
b. Monitor welding activities, including preheat, interpass temperatures, consumable control, and compliance with approved WPSs.
c. Cross-verify welder qualifications (WQ) and WPS traceability on live jobs.
d. Identify welding defects and initiate relevant QA hold points.

3.3. NDT & Witness Coordination
a. Prepare and tag components for MPI or UT testing.
b. Liaise with NDT service providers and witness testing as required.
c. Document results and escalate critical findings to QA Manager and Production Lead.

3.4. Non-Conformance Reporting & Corrective Actions
a. Log NCs and ensure effective closure of root causes through collaboration with Production, Engineering, and Planning.
b. Support implementation of preventive measures to reduce repeated QA failures.
c. Work with Production and Engineering to close out corrective actions.

3.5. Reporting & Documentation
a. Complete QA checklist and inspection report documentation for every stage of fabrication.
b. Maintain accurate digital and physical records in alignment with IMS protocols.
c. Support the compilation of Manufacturing Data Records (MDRs) by providing inspection documentation.
d. Escalate recurring trends or deviations to QA Management.

3.6. Stakeholder Coordination
a. Work closely with Welders, Supervisors, Engineers, and Project Managers.
b. Participate in daily QA meetings and support toolbox talks where required.
c. Provide on-the-job guidance to production personnel on quality expectations and workmanship standards.

3.7. Safety & Housekeeping
a. Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) requirements while performing inspections.
b. Promote safe working practices and intervene when unsafe conditions are observed.
