Marker Scientist

As a member of the Sakata EMEA molecular biology team, you will be responsible for marker discovery. Your contribution to the team will ensure that the research team is able to develop varieties that satisfy the needs of customers across the region and beyond

• Drive marker discovery projects from inception to validation
• Develop molecular markers linked to agronomically important traits
• Characterize the genetic basis of target traits, dissecting their inheritance patterns, gene interactions, and environmental influences.
• Analyze genomic data generated from sequencing, genotyping arrays, or other molecular profiling technologies to identify genetic variations and quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with target traits.
• Utilize bioinformatics tools and statistical methods to interpret genomic and phenotypic data.
• Map genomic regions underlying complex traits using linkage mapping, association mapping, and other genetic mapping approaches
• Contribute to the development and transfer of marker assays to the routine part of molecular laboratories and engage in continuous improvement of marker‑trait associations.
• Promote, strengthen and propose the development of scientific partnerships with internal and external parties.
• Implement new breeding technologies to advance the breeding.
• Promotes and strengthens the development of Intellectual Property in the Research department.

You will be based in South Africa at the company`s research facility in Lanseria, just west of Johannesburg.

You will be joining a dynamic, multicultural team of researchers operating within EMEA.

• PhD degree specializing in genetics or MSc with 5 years of working experience.
• Fluency in English complemented by excellent written and verbal communication and listening skills with a variety of internal or external audiences.
• A passion for continuous improvement and problem-solving with demonstrating initiative.
• Well-developed scientific writing skills and detail orientated.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
