Field Testing Breeding Technical Trainee

Job Purpose:

This trainee position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in plant breeding operations and to gain initial experience in practical field trials with an international seed company. This program is ideal for graduating students who want to pursue a career in agronomic research and crop production.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Participate in all aspects of seed preparation, planting, harvesting and data collection.
  • Perform computer-related activities, including handheld data collection, data management and providing support for all day-to-day activities.
  • Coordinate and assist in all seed preparation operations including seed shelling, packaging, treating and packet arrangement.
  • Coordinate and assist with all field operations including machine planting yield trial plots, nurseries, pollinations, data collection and machine harvesting of yield trial plots.
  • Lead field teams and assist with timely and accurate data collection from research plots.
  • Assist in implementation of site safety programs to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Actively participate in the evaluation and implementation of new technologies.
  • Communicate with farmers to coordinate off-station trials.
  • Approximately 50% of responsibilities are off-site field related activities, which involves traveling.
Qualifications and Competencies
  • National Diploma with appropriate experience in a relevant discipline.
  • Basic knowledge of crop production, farming practices and farm equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of mobile data collection is an advantage.
  • Driver’s license.
