RESPONSIBILITIES
We're looking for a Junior Research Scientist to join our R&D team, contributing to experimental work across our product platforms; from enzyme and fermentation optimisation to cosmetic ingredient development and agricultural peptide assays. This is a hands‑on laboratory role within a small, fast‑moving team, offering direct exposure to multiple areas of the business.
Research & Experimental WorkAssist in the planning, execution, and optimisation of laboratory experiments under the guidance of senior scientists.
Conduct experimental work related to:
- Food and beverage biotechnology (enzymes, fermentation, formulations, process optimisation)
- Agricultural peptides assay development and testing
- Cosmetic ingredient development and testing
- Pharmaceutical and life‑science R&D projects
- Internal research and platform technology development
Accurately follow experimental protocols, SOPs, and project plans.
Perform routine laboratory techniques, including sample preparation, assays, fermentation support, protein handling, and basic analytical methods as required by project scope.
Project Support & Reporting- Maintain clear, complete, and traceable experimental records in laboratory notebooks and digital systems.
- Assist with data collection, basic analysis, interpretation, and presentation of results.
- Contribute to internal reports, project updates, summaries, and presentations for technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Support the preparation of documentation for internal reviews, client reporting, and regulatory or quality‑related requirements where applicable.
Support the day‑to‑day operation of the laboratory, including:
- Preparation of media, buffers, and reagents
- Equipment setup, calibration support, and basic maintenance
- Assisting with technical work across departments when required, including short‑term support for active projects outside the primary assigned division.
- Following all laboratory safety, biosafety, quality, and contamination‑control procedures at all times.
Maintain a clean, sterile, and organised laboratory environment, including:
- Washing and sterilising laboratory glassware and consumables
- Proper waste segregation and disposal
- Cleaning and disinfecting work surfaces and shared equipment
- Actively participating in weekly laboratory cleaning and maintenance routines.
- Ensuring compliance with internal hygiene, GMP‑aligned, and quality system requirements.
- Work collaboratively with scientists, technicians, project managers, and operations staff across Immobazyme.
- Assist colleagues where required to meet project timelines and operational needs.
- Demonstrate flexibility and a team‑oriented mindset in a fast‑moving, start‑up‑style R&D environment.
- MSc in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or Biochemistry

- Own laptop and own transport: required.
- Location:
full‑time onsite position in Macassar, Cape Town.
- Starting salary: R20 000 gross per month, excluding PAYE and mandatory deductions required by law.
- Probation: 3‑month probation period; 10% salary increase upon successful probation period.
