This programme is designed to equip candidates with the skills and practical experience required to support train operations safely and efficiently across Transnet’s rail network.
The Train Assistant Trainee Programme focuses on preparing individuals to assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of different types of trains and locomotive consists, including:
- Airbrake trains
- High-speed trains
- Heavy haul trains
The primary objective is to ensure freight and cargo reach their destinations safely, on time, and in good condition, supporting Transnet’s commitment to customer satisfaction and operational excellence.
Key ResponsibilitiesAs a Train Assistant Trainee, you will:
- Sign on duty and receive shift allocations
- Determine which locomotive must be prepared
- Obtain and place required equipment on the locomotive
- Check and supplement prescribed equipment
- Clean the working area
- Assist with locomotive start-up procedures
- Assist with brake testing
- Obtain radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, and telemeters
- Check functionality of communication equipment
- Perform pre-trip checks to ensure compliance with safety standards
- Attach and detach vehicles where required
- Mount telemeters and train indicators
- Complete vehicle lists and vacuum forms
- Conduct brake tests in conjunction with the Train Driver
- Perform shunting and truck placement/removal
- Update vehicle lists
- Place and clear load/empty trucks at sidings
- Verbally compare signal positions with the Train Driver
- Observe safe train movement
- Reset locomotive trip-outs
- Protect the train during incidents
- Assist during emergency situations
- Complete the train journal and submit reports at sign-off
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics or Physical Science
- Must be at least 21 years old (in line with operational requirements)
- Minimum height of 1.6 metres
- Physically fit (hearing, vision, mental and general fitness)
- Willing to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments
- Psychomotor ability (assessed via Vienna Testing System – VTS standards)
- Ability to carry heavy objects
Candidates must be willing and capable of completing both theoretical and practical training to obtain certification as a Train Assistant.
Selection ProcessThe selection process includes:
- Medical examinations
- Safety behavioural risk assessments
- Practical and theoretical training
Only candidates who successfully complete all assessments and training components will be certified to work independently as Train Assistants.
