Theatre Support Worker

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and reliable individual to join and support our theatre teams in Ealing hospital. You will perform supportive roles alongside experts in the field in a busy but friendly environment using advanced technology to care and serve our patients in different surgical specialties. Theatre experience will be an advantage, but in‑house training and education will be provided for suitable candidates to fulfill the role.

You will also participate as part of the team to support the out of hours, weekend and night time emergency surgery after training.

Newly appointed staff have a supernumerary induction period, supported by a Practice Development Nurse using our in‑house competency documents. The department offers training and career development for our support workers.

Upon successful completion of the theatre support worker competency programme, you will circulate for a range of procedures under supervision. You will also have a chance to learn to manage the instrument and stock supply for the department. As your confidence and knowledge grows you will take an active role in teaching newcomers and trainee theatre support workers.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Assisting the surgical team to provide a quality service.
  • Assisting the surgical team to deliver safe patient care.
  • Supporting the surgical team in the preparation of sterile and non‑sterile equipment.
  • Preparing the theatre prior to commencing a list in different specialties.
  • Maintaining a clean and tidy environment throughout theatres to comply with Infection Prevention Requirements.
  • Maintaining consumable stock levels in theatres as well as in storage areas.
  • Supporting out‑of‑hour emergency surgery as a member of the Emergency CEPOD Theatre team; rotating to weekends, nights or on‑call duties.

Job responsibilities
  • Demonstrate Trust HEART value at all time.
  • Work under the direction and supervision of the registered practitioner to deliver planned programmes of care.
  • Assisting in receiving patients into theatres.
  • Assists in the collection of patients from the ward.
  • Assists in preparation and safety check of equipment before lists start under the direction of the Registered Practitioner.
  • Scan used instrument before putting into sterile service trolley ready for collection.
  • Unpacks, records and put away sterile instrument arrived in the department from sterilisation service.
  • Supplying the surgical team with items as instructed.
  • Assisting the scrub team in gowning and gloving.
  • Counts swabs with a registered nurse or registered ODP.
  • Assisting in transferring patients intraoperatively with appropriate equipment/table attachments prepared beforehand.
  • Dispatch specimens after checks completed by registered practitioner to laboratory as instructed.
  • Participate in cleaning and disposal of waste in accordance with theatre policy before and after operation.
  • Assist in general upkeep of consumable stock levels in theatre, scrub rooms and storage areas.
  • Ensure adequate supply of medical gas cylinders in the department.
  • Ensure adequate supply of specimen containers in the department.
  • Ensure patient trolleys/beds are cleaned, prepared and they are in good working order.
  • Escalate estate issues and report to helpdesk for repair.
  • Contribute to accurate documentation by input data on Electronic Patient Record and Theatre Information Management System as appropriate to job role.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to information governance practice.
  • Comply with Trust/local policies and procedure.
