Overview

The post holder will hold a post of Consultant in Geriatric Medicine at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, and be based at Ealing Hospital. Our collective goal is to provide excellent care for our frail older patient in both in hospital and at home through outpatient services. We aim to treat acute illness appropriately, to enhance quality of life, to reduce disability, recognise when life is nearing its end, and to provide individualised person‑centred care in the right setting at the right time.

Department

The Department of Medicine for Older People (DMOP) based in Ealing Hospital and Northwick Park Hospital is a dynamic, friendly, inclusive and innovative department where Consultants are supported in their professional development and in the delivery of high‑quality clinical care and service development. Resident doctor feedback indicates that they feel well supported and that they achieve their educational targets. We aspire to high standards of medical and nursing care and routinely assess aspects of this with regular clinical auditing.

Mentoring is provided by the Trust's mentor scheme for any new consultant.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide in‑patient care for patients on the Medicine for Older People wards at Ealing hospital.
  • Work in the frailty unit, focusing on comprehensive geriatric assessment for older people presenting to the Emergency Department and referred for urgent assessment from the community.
  • Contribute to outpatient care in clinics and work with the clinical leads for DMOP and cardiology to establish a new clinic for frail people with heart failure.
  • Provide GIM on call as detailed above.
  • Support clinical governance, including contribution to morbidity and mortality meetings, quality improvement projects and clinical audit.
  • Take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and supervision.
  • Contribute to service development where relevant.
  • Liaise with and teach nursing staff, health care assistants, therapists and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain CPD and participate in annual appraisal and revalidation.
