Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers a range of Patient Administrator, Patient Services Centre Administrator and Ward Secretary roles that are essential to the seamless operation of our services and have a significant impact on patient experience.
Work LocationsPositions are available at Southampton General Hospital, Adanac Park, Royal South Hants Hospital, Princess Anne Hospital, and Lymington Hospital.

Roles and Responsibilities- Ward Secretary
: collaborate with ward leaders, coordinate meetings, manage documentation, provide exceptional customer service via phone and in‑person, and support cancer care administration. - Patient Administrator
: build relationships with clinicians, manage outpatient referrals, coordinate appointments, handle correspondence, act as first point of contact, and cover for colleagues when needed. - Patient Services Administrator
: frontline contact with patients, handle high call volume, book and reschedule appointments, manage clinic schedules, cover reception desks, support patient packs, and work core hours 7 am‑6 pm weekdays, 8 am‑4:30 pm Saturdays.
- GCSE level literacy and numeracy, or equivalent.
- Level 3 or Level 2 qualification in administration/customer service, or equivalent experience.
- Experience as an administrator or secretary in a customer‑focused setting and ability to use judgement in problem‑solving.
- Knowledge of administrative procedures and use of Microsoft Office/365.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Further study or courses indicating personal development.
- Vocational Level 3 in administration/word processing/typing.
- Diploma level qualification.
- Experience in a clinical patient service or medical secretarial role.
- Proficiency with hospital computerised patient systems.
- Understanding of patient pathways and local/national RTT and cancer pathway targets.
