Start Date: ASAP
Contract Type: Fixed term
Duration: 12 months (to end in October 2027)
Purpose for Fixed Term: Covering Maternity Leave
Main duties of the jobAs part of our team, you will work collaboratively with colleagues, helping to deliver excellent services and ensuring the highest standards of patient care. University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) has an exciting opportunity to join our Urology team as a locum consultant covering maternity leave. The successful candidate will join our team of consultants, middle grades, ACP, CNS and doctors in training to provide Urology services across the breadth of cancer and benign urology in a tertiary centre.
The role will suit a urologist with excellent skills in core urology and a subspecialist interest in endoluminal endourology and BPH surgery would be desirable. Contribution to the diagnostic pathway for this patient cohort will be expected.
Key to delivery of this role will be collaborative working with a wide range of healthcare professionals. As a tertiary teaching hospital there is an expectation to train specialty doctors, fellows and doctors in training as well as support colleagues and the department's forward vision.
About usAs one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated 'Good' by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.
We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.
Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 30% lower than London and 17 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.
We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.
Job responsibilitiesUHS is a large teaching hospital and major trauma centre with a wide tertiary catchment across the south coast. We provide tertiary cancer services for prostate, kidney, adrenal, bladder, penis and testis with open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery (Da Vinci X and Xi). We have a breadth of benign service ranging from andrology, stones, BPH and general urology and we network with Salisbury for female, neuro and video-urodynamic expertise.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care while working collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation. Provide high-quality urology care by assessing, diagnosing, and managing patients with a range of elective and emergency urological conditions across outpatient, inpatient, and theatre settings.
Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to support service delivery, maintain accurate clinical documentation, and contribute to the effective management of patient pathways and waiting lists.
Undertake urology clinics, ward rounds, operating sessions, and on-call commitments as required, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred care throughout the period of maternity leave cover.
