As a Practice Educator, you will play a pivotal role in creating high‑quality learning environments for apprentices and student learners from higher education institutes (HEIs). This position is designed to ensure that education delivery across surgery is innovative, inclusive, and aligned with best practice standards.
In this role, you will contribute directly to the Trust’s mission of delivering exceptional patient care by supporting learners and staff to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for safe and effective practice. You will collaborate closely with multi‑professional teams, higher education partners, and internal stakeholders to plan, deliver, and evaluate education programmes. Reporting to the Senior Clinical Practice Educator, you will also provide clinical supervision, mentoring, and coaching to learners and staff, ensuring that educational provision meets regulatory and organisational requirements.

DetailedJob Description and Main Responsibilities
The Surgery Education and Practice Development Team at UHS seek a highly motivated professional and well‑organised individual with the required skills and knowledge and a passion for developing themselves and others to join the team as a Clinical Practice Educator.
The Surgery care group is part of Division A at University Hospital Southampton Foundation Trust. Within the care group there are 160 beds and six outpatient areas providing specialist care for both elective and emergency patients. Specialist areas include Head and Neck, Urology, Upper GI, Lower GI, Hepatopancreatic and Biliary surgery, and Intestinal Failure. The successful candidate will join the Surgery Education and Practice Development team to deliver education, supporting staff and learners to provide the high level of care our patients require.
The Education and Practice Development team operates Monday to Friday, offering flexibility in working hours and no unsocial shifts. Strong communication skills are essential, as the role involves delivering training, clinical supervision, and providing pastoral support to learners and staff, including constructive feedback. You’ll need to work effectively under pressure, managing competing priorities and adapting to the dynamic demands of clinical education.

Person SpecificationEssential Criteria
- Professional requirements e.g. Registered Nurse or Registered Professional or non‑registered support worker
- Professional knowledge acquired through degree education or equivalent experience
- Mentoring / coaching / education qualification to post‑graduate diploma level or equivalent evidence of supporting learners in practice
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Significant experience within relevant field
- Experience of educating others in a formal or informal setting
- Broad awareness of Trust initiatives and pressures
- Education at a master’s degree level
- Further education at a master’s degree level in relevant practice area
- Leadership qualification or significant equivalent experience
- Previous Band 6 experience
- Further evidence of speciality competence
