Science Technician

An excellent opportunity for an organised and enthusiastic Science Technician to support practical science lessons, laboratory preparation, equipment maintenance and student learning within a busy secondary school.

SALARY: £19,976 per annum (Actual £25,186 FTE) + Benefits

LOCATION: Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire

JOB TYPE: Full-Time, Permanent

WORKING HOURS: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday 8.30am – 4.00pm, term time only (38 weeks)

JOB OVERVIEW

The school is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Science Technician to join its science department on a full-time, permanent, term-time-only basis. Working closely with the Senior Science Technician, the successful candidate will help prepare, organise and maintain practical science resources, equipment and experiments, supporting engaging and effective teaching and learning across the department. This is a varied role requiring excellent organisation, attention to detail, flexibility and a genuine interest in science.

Previous laboratory experience or a background in science would be highly desirable.

DUTIES
  • Preparing Experiments: Set up class and demonstration experiments at staff request, ensuring apparatus and resources are ready for practical science lessons
  • Supporting Practical Learning: Help organise practical learning opportunities and workshop activities, supporting a smooth and effective learning environment
  • Maintaining Equipment: Clean, clear, maintain and manage science apparatus, fittings, data logger equipment and laboratory resources to ensure they remain in safe working order
  • Stock Control: Assist with stock control, replacement of apparatus and stationery, inventory checks and maintenance of stock control systems
  • Health and Safety: Support health and safety requirements within the science department, including COSHH and CLEAPSS procedures
  • Laboratory Organisation: Help maintain laboratories, storage areas, preparation rooms and equipment in a clean, safe and organised condition
  • Technical Support: Prepare solutions, construct simple apparatus and carry out PAT testing on electrical equipment within the science department
  • Department Support: Assist teaching staff with less routine requests, such as open evenings, cover work and materials required during teacher absence
  • General Support: Work flexibly and undertake other reasonable duties within the scope of the role as required
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS ESSENTIAL
  • GCSE in Science
  • Good science subject knowledge
  • Good ICT skills
  • Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Flexible approach with the ability to manage a wide range of tasks
  • Patience, tact and diplomacy
  • Commitment to supporting students and effective teaching and learning
  • Ability to assist in other areas of the school as needed
  • Valid First Aid at Work certificate
DESIRABLE
  • A-Level in Science
  • Background in science
  • Previous laboratory experience
