Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for a Senior Design Engineer on 6 month rolling contracts based in Southampton - hybrid.

Role Summary

The Senior Design Engineer will play a key role in the electrical design and technical delivery of control panels, MCCs, and automation systems. The role involves leading complex design activities, ensuring compliance with standards, supporting manufacturing and commissioning, and mentoring design engineers and junior engineers. The Senior Design Engineer will work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure technically robust, compliant, and cost-effective solutions are delivered.

Technical Responsibilities - Design & Engineering

Lead the development of electrical design and software of control panels, MCCs and automation systems from concept through to manufacture.

Responsible for verifying designs through thorough testing regimes of the built equipment.

Produce and review detailed electrical schematics, layouts and wiring diagrams.

Ensure designs meet client specifications, functional requirements and operational safety standards.

Select and specify electrical components in line with performance, compliance, and cost objectives. Ensure activities and outputs are achieved within budget and programme restraints.

Work with the design engineering manager to improve design standards, templates, and processes.

Technical Support & Collaboration

Mentor and support design engineers and juniors.

Contribute to the development of design standards, templates, and best practices.

Identify opportunities for design optimisation, standardisation, and innovation.

Stay up to date with changes in standards, technology, and industry best practice.

Provide technical support to manufacturing and assembly teams during panel build.

Resolve design-related issues during manufacture, testing, and commissioning.

Support project teams with technical input during FAT, SAT, and site commissioning.

Assist with technical queries from clients, inspectors and site engineers.

Assist with technical documentation for handover, ensuring compliant documents are submitted in accordance with project programmes.

Lead and participate in technical reviews and design meetings

Ensure all designs comply with BS EN (phone number removed):2021 and applicable international standards.

Requirements:

Essential

Degree, HNC, or HND in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline (or

equivalent by experience).

Strong working knowledge of BS EN (phone number removed):2021 and associated LV assembly

standards.

Formal training or proven competence in electrical design of control panels and MCCs.

Health & Safety awareness training relevant to electrical design and manufacturing

environments.

Proven experience designing LV control panels and MCCs.

Hands-on experience producing compliant designs in line with BS EN (phone number removed):2021.

Experience supporting manufacturing, testing (FAT), and resolving design issues during

build.

Ability to interpret client specifications and deliver custom-built, compliant design

solutions.

Experience with intelligent MCC systems.

Experience designing automation systems, including PLC-based control and industrial

communications.

Experience mentoring engineers or providing technical leadership within a design tea

Desirable

Postgraduate qualification or advanced training in electrical power, automation, or

systems engineering.

Electrical CAD certification or advanced user capability (e.g. EPLAN, AutoCAD

Electrical, Promis.

E).

Manufacturer or industry training on MCC systems, intelligent motor control, or

automation platforms.

Project or engineering management qualification (e.g. APMP, PRINCE2 Foundation).

Involvement in site commissioning, SAT, or technical client handover activities.
