About the Role

The UK’s fleet of Scientific Research Vessels provide the ocean‑going scientific platforms to support the UK’s worldwide oceanographic research programme. The successful candidate will work under the Captain, Chief Officer and Chief Petty Officer (Deck) on either RRS Discovery or RRS James Cook. The role supports the coordination of general deck activities and associated deck maintenance activities, assists with the supervision of the Deck Ratings, and reports to the CPO (Deck) as their direct line manager.

The candidate will also understudy the responsibilities of the CPO (Deck).

Qualifications and Requirements
  • AB (SG1A) Certificate issued by UK MCA (proof required on application)
  • Navigation Watch Rating Certificate issued in compliance with STCW 2010
  • MCA Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) without restrictions or an MCA recognised equivalent (proof required on application)
  • Four elements of basic training to STCW 95:
    First Aid, Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  • STCW
    95 Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
  • Right to work in the UK without the need for employer sponsorship
  • A valid Discharge Book
  • Possession of a US C1/D and/or B1/B2 visa (or ability to obtain one) and ability to undertake unrestricted worldwide travel
  • Relevant experience working onboard a scientific research vessel or in a similar marine sector (e.g. OSV, PSV, ERRV, DSV) plus evidence of specialist knowledge and experience with overboard handling and lifting equipment and their maintenance
Hours of Work

Seagoing tours of duty normally encompass at least two full scientific expeditions, or a minimum of two months, although tour periods may vary depending on the ship’s operational programme. Leave is accrued at the rate of 27 days for each calendar month of service onboard. Unused leave may be liquidated in accordance with NOC policy.

Location

This position will be based onboard one of the two Royal Research Ships (RRS Discovery or RRS James Cook) operated by NOC. The ships operate worldwide but are based at NOC Southampton.
