Purpose for Fixed Term:
Training Contract

This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum

Main duties of the job

Senior Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine with a 50/50 split in Research/FUSIC

There Are Options For
  • Critical Care research with 50:50 Clinical and Research commitments
  • FUSIC fellowship (Focussed Ultrasound for Intensive Care) with 50:50 Clinical and FUSIC commitments

Starting August 2026

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements
  • To support the provision of a first-class clinical service and provide effective middle-grade leadership (ST3 level or above) to the staff working on the unit.
  • To support the clinical decision making of medical and nursing staff on the unit.
  • To lead, in conjunction with the Consultant workforce, the education programme for junior doctors.
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies.
  • To conduct clinical practice by contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s and Division’s services plans.

Job Description And Main Responsibilities

This post offers an opportunity to develop research skills with 50:50 clinical and research commitments. UHS has an expanding Research portfolio in Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine. These posts provide an opportunity for a Senior Fellow to pursue research projects at all levels including involvement in ongoing studies within the department or to pursue personal research interests. The successful candidate can make use of established datasets to explore their ideas.

There are also opportunities to become NIHR associate principal investigator for several clinical trials in both critical care and perioperative medicine.

The appointee will be expected to support the delivery a high-quality care to all the patients presenting to the department.
