Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as an experienced Band 5 Staff Nurses in the Emergency Care group within University Hospital Southampton (UHS), we have opportunities' for both the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and the Emergency Department. Do you have previous AMU / ED experience, this could be the role for you!

AMU is a very busy 54 bedded unit spread across five areas. We admit patients directly from the emergency department, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) or GP, at their most unwell phase at any time of the day or night. We aim to treat our patients and either discharge them home within 48hrs of admission, or to move to a speciality ward within this time.

This means no two days will be the same and our patients are always changing.

ED is a major trauma centre providing care to patients requiring a variety of services including; major trauma, majors assessment and treatment area and minor injuries. The department also has an enhanced care suite dedicated to those patients experiencing a mental health crisis. The ED prides itself on delivering high quality patient centred care in a fast paced environment.

The ED is an excited place to work, great team work and multi-disciplinary working ensures that all new starters are made to feel supported and welcome. As you progress through your induction a vast array of learning opportunities are available such as triage competency, suturing, dementia champion, ALS, cannulation and venesection and trauma ILS.

Job responsibilities

In this role, your key responsibilities will include having strong patient focus and are eager to develop clinical skills within the Acute Medical Unit. You will be offered opportunities to develop both clinically and professionally within a supportive environment.

The Acute Medical Unit is a constantly changing environment so a positive attitude to change and service developments is required. Candidates will need to be able to demonstrate the aptitude to work in a fast-paced environment and constantly changing area with both motivation and enthusiasm.

There will be a requirement of flexibility to work the full range of shifts within a 24-hour shift pattern is essential, however we are happy to review shift flexibility to ensure work life balance.
