Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for Staff Nurses within the Cardiac ICU. The Trust is a designated major trauma centre with cardiac, neuro and general intensive care units.

We offer education and development opportunities including advanced cardiac training, ALS, leadership programmes and critical care competencies. The formal education package includes induction training, an in‑house Foundation programme and a nationally recognised competency package. Staff can apply for adult Critical Care courses at degree or master’s level.

You will deliver high‑standard, individualised patient care in accordance with Trust policies and core values, working effectively in highly pressurised situations with maturity, motivation and enthusiasm.

Job Description And Main Responsibilities

We are looking for nurses with experience in critical care or acute settings who are ready for the next step in their nursing career, passionate and willing to inspire, develop and support patients and colleagues every day.

Candidates must be flexible, able to work a full range of shifts across a 7‑day rota, and possess excellent communication skills. They should demonstrate effective multi‑disciplinary team working and a strong commitment to meeting the needs of the service.

The successful applicant will work flexibly with an established team and develop critical care skills to become a competent member of the nursing team caring for critically ill patients in a complex environment.

Person Specification Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience Essential criteria
  • Qualified nurse (degree or diploma)
  • Registered nurse on the appropriate part of the register
  • Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service
  • Understanding of personal accountability
  • Knowledge of own role within the team
  • Evidence of teaching and supporting learners in practice as a practice supervisor
  • Awareness of evidence‑based practice
  • Awareness of responsibilities for management of infection control
  • Evidence of ongoing personal development
  • Ability to use initiative

  • Previous experience or qualification in a relevant specialty
