Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers a role for a Breast Care Nurse specialist. The position is 21 hours per week, with a focus on providing high‑quality, compassionate care across the breast cancer pathway.
The Breast Care Nurse acts as a key point of contact, delivering clinical support, information, and emotional reassurance from diagnosis through treatment, follow‑up and survivorship. The role works with surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and allied health professionals, contributing to improved patient experience and outcomes.
Responsibilities- Provide specialist clinical, emotional and informational support to patients across the breast cancer pathway.
- Use advanced communication, assessment and coordination skills to support patients, families and the multidisciplinary team.
- Work autonomously while contributing effectively to the Breast Care Nursing team and supporting service priorities and organisational quality and safety objectives.
- Show awareness of wider Trust pressures, including demand management, performance targets and service improvement priorities, and work proactively within these constraints.
- Work flexibly to meet service needs, including covering agreed clinic times and participating in service development activities.
Essential Criteria
- Registered nurse on the relevant part of the NMC register
- Degree qualification or equivalent 120 credits at Level 6
- Post‑registration qualification within area of speciality or equivalent experience
- Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies
- Extensive post‑registration experience within a specialist area of breast cancer care
- Registered on MSc Pathway – completion of HTPA competencies
- Counselling qualification
- Palliative care course
