Main Duties

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated senior nurse to join the management team at Hamwic House as a Sister/Charge Nurse for a full‑time position and a one‑year secondment covering a maternity leave. Hamwic House is a busy outpatient department that provides services for adult cancer patients, including SACT (systemic anti‑cancer therapies), blood product transfusions, supportive therapies, phlebotomy services, PICC insertions and oncology outpatient clinics.

The successful applicant will be qualified and experienced in SACT administration.

The appointment will report to the Band 7 and support them in managing the nursing team, which includes staff nurses, healthcare assistants and housekeepers. The role involves completing yearly IPRS, managing sickness, performance and supporting development opportunities for the team.

As a Band 6 at Hamwic House, the nurse will coordinate the flow of the unit, communicate with pharmacy and the SACT coordination teams, ensure safe staffing levels and support junior team members with complex issues. Excellent communication skills and stress management are essential to handle multiple issues calmly and professionally.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the cancer care bleep holder, overseeing staffing levels for the care group with support from the matron team.

• Provide support to other cancer care wards in need of assistance with acute staffing challenges and administer SACT outside the care group footprint when required.

• Attend study days and leadership courses to support personal development, including advanced communication and HR processes.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
  • Qualified registered nurse (degree or diploma).
  • Registered nurse on the appropriate part of the register.
  • Significant post‑registration experience or training within the relevant speciality.
  • Ward management experience.
  • Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service.
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Evidence of supporting and managing a range of learners in practice.
  • Evidence of promoting effective learning for colleagues.
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical decision‑making and judgement.
  • Commitment to the post and Care Group responsibilities.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development.
