Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist – Supportive and Palliative Care Team

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

We are seeking a dynamic Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our Supportive and Palliative Care Team, playing a pivotal role in ensuring patients receive expert, person‑centred care that enhances quality of life and supports their families throughout their care journey.

As a senior member of the team, you will provide specialist clinical expertise, leadership, education, and advocacy for patients with complex supportive and palliative care needs across inpatient settings. The post holder will work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver seamless care, influence best practice and support service development in line with team, organisational and national priorities.

This role has a significant impact on improving patient and family experience, supporting decision‑making, facilitating advance care planning and ensuring equitable access to specialist palliative care services. Through expert assessment, symptom management and leadership, you will contribute to improving outcomes and the delivery of high‑quality compassionate care.

The Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist reports to the Lead Nurse for Supportive and Palliative Care and works closely with consultants, specialist nurses, allied health professionals, ward teams and community services.

Responsibilities
  • Practice at an advanced level to provide in‑depth knowledge to deliver personalised care.
  • Line manage direct reports, including all stages of recruitment, retention, attendance and performance management.
  • Facilitate change to promote practice development and service improvement/modernisation activities, in accordance with local and national service policy or guidance.
  • Identify gaps in evidence and/or practice knowledge that require resolution through research, and initiate or assist in research activities as appropriate.
Experience and Skills
  • Specialist clinical skills and experience at Band 6 level within specialist palliative care.
  • Experience of supporting/managing learners in practice.
  • Negotiation and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to assimilate clinical information quickly to provide specialist interventions.
  • Required to work across a 7‑day a‑week service.
