Overview
The Novel and Compound facility Glass part of the Zepler Clean rooms at the University of Southampton is creating the next generation of advanced materials for optical, photonic and electronic applications. You will be hosted in the Sustainable Electronic Technologies group in the Electronics and Computer Science through which the Novel and Compound facilities are managed. The team develops chalcogenide and layered materials from two dimensional materials to specialty bulk glasses, with a friendly, collaborative environment and a focus on cutting-edge research and the development of people.
Responsibilities- Drive the production of chalcogenide precursors and glasses using unique processes developed at Southampton.
- Operate Novel and Compound Glass equipment including glove boxes, tube furnaces, annealing furnaces, Chemical Vapour Deposition, Atomic Layer Deposition, and a variety of custom and characterisation systems.
- Receive full training and work with the team to perform experimental activities.
- Contribute to modelling and simulations as part of the research, including knowledge of AI tools for materials discovery at the atomistic level to enhance capabilities.
- PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in physics, chemistry, engineering or materials science.
- A strong portfolio of relevant publications and significant experience in advanced materials science and technology.
- Experience in leading or supervising other members of a research project.

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
