Overview

Postdoctoral Research Assistant – National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

The National Oceanography Centre, part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation delivering integrated marine science and technology. It is one of the world s leading centres for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development, with sites in Liverpool and Southampton.

The post is based in the Marine Physics and Ocean Climate Group at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. You will join the Ocean Circulation and Processes group and collaborate with the DEEP-C project (Diagnosing Earth s Energy Pathways in the Climate system) with the University of Reading and the Met Office, as well as other UK and international scientists. There will be an opportunity to take part in a major research cruise gathering new ocean climate data.

Responsibilities
  • Generate global estimates of full-depth ocean heat content (OHC) using in situ data including Argo and hydrographic data.
  • Investigate the spatial distribution of OHC since 2000 to describe and understand the recent hiatus in surface temperature rise.
  • Collaborate with project partners and contribute to analyses that support understanding Earth s energy pathways in the climate system.
  • Participate in relevant field campaigns or cruises as opportunities arise.
Qualifications
  • PhD, or equivalent research experience, in Physical Oceanography.
  • Experience in analysis of in situ oceanographic data.
Employment details
  • Funded by a Standard Research Grant from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) for a period of three years.
  • Salary band: NERC Band 6 with a salary range of £26,450 to £29,710 per annum.
