The School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton is recruiting a Research Fellow in Phanerozoic Ocean Biogeochemistry and Earth System Evolution. The successful applicant will develop and apply the cGENIE Earth system model for the NERC Pushing the Frontiers project “Determining extinction correlates on geological timescales”, supervised by Dr Richard Stockey and in collaboration with University of Oxford and University of Leeds.
Responsibilities- Generate a series of reconstructive models of 3D ocean biogeochemistry over the Phanerozoic (last ~540 Myr).
- Explore uncertainty in three‑dimensional ocean biogeochemistry and its implications for geochemical proxy records and marine ecosystems.
- Produce publications that contribute to academic programmes and advance the research group.
- PhD/DPhil in Earth sciences (or nearing completion) with relevant research experience.
- Prior experience in intermediate‑complexity Earth system modelling and integration of key components over geological timescales.
- Strong track record in computational Earth science research, including developing and deploying new skills.
- Capable of working independently, managing own research activities, and contributing to academic publications.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills; ability to represent the research group effectively in meetings and collaborative discussions.
