What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?This role is part of the Toxicology team which is responsible for the delivery of toxicological ingredients, material and product evaluations in accordance with guidelines from the Product Stewardship Council (PSC) in line with the Research & Development Policy Framework, Corporate Positions and specific legislation for our product categories. This role plays an integral role in delivering innovations to market.
What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?Deliver desk based toxicological evaluations in accordance with Consumer Product Safety guidelines, the Research & Development policy framework to support BATs portfolio. Toxicological evaluations will be carried out to support different stages of product development, covering discovery, development and deploy.
This role is under the guidance of the team manager and with the support of other team members. The role holder will be responsible for their own workload management and communicating with partners (line managers and Project teams) on progress to achieve business milestones. The role involves overcoming challenging assessments, creatively thinking and outlining data requirements/gaps to build robust safety evaluations of BAT products.
Reports to: Scientist II - Toxicology
Number of Direct Reports: N/A – Close collaboration with other team members to highlight opportunities in new approaches, and to coach/train others in execution of activities.
Core Relationships: Internal – Maintain and build effective working relationships with internal partners, suppliers, and designated contacts within BAT. Close cooperation with all Product Stewardship group members. External – Scientific engagement, collaboration and communication with external partners.

Key responsibilities will include:- To recommend and guide the project teams on the toxicology evaluations, tests and design needed to build the data packages for the individual product launches.
- Author, review and sign off risk assessments as part of the toxicological evaluation of new ingredients, technologies and materials.
- Responsible to articulate and drive defined program areas or tools to harmonise approaches between categories and streamline the assessment of different ingredient types (e.g. Naturals, Skin Sensitizers).
- Apply appropriate solutions or approaches to identify and resolve problems based on an understanding and experience of biology, toxicology, or chemistry.
- Work closely with product development teams as a knowledgeable, enabling partner, providing feedback at all stages of the projects that helps set their direction.
- Maintain and build effective working relationships with internal partners, suppliers, and designated contacts within BAT.
- Budget – adhere to financial process and controls where applicable.
- Relevant science background equivalent to a degree level qualification, preferably with a good understanding of the principles of Toxicology. Ideally demonstrated technical background in toxicology test packages, particularly ingredient and product risk assessment.
- Awareness of technical developments in toxicology & regulations (tobacco & consumer goods) desirable.
- Positive ‘can do’ and one‑team attitude by sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues, and contributing to joint problem‑solving.
- Proven attention to detail and accuracy in work to enable the delivery of thorough and robust work.
- Collaborative ways of working with internal and cross‑functional partners to deliver business needs.
- Proficient computing skills to facilitate use of in-house databases and skilled user of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
