Research Scientist, Data Scientist
The School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in Igneous Petrology & Quantitative Textural Analysis to contribute to ongoing research into igneous crystal textures using electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD). This is a fixed term (six months), part-time position (0.5 FTE, 17.5 hours per week).
The successful candidate will work closely with Dr Martin Mangler on research projects focused on the quantitative analysis of crystal textures (including crystal shapes, twinning, synneusis) in volcanic and plutonic rocks using EBSD and related techniques. The postholder will contribute specialist expertise in the acquisition, processing and interpretation of EBSD datasets and will help expand the use of these techniques within ongoing research projects.
The position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to high-quality research outputs, with the expectation that the successful candidate will lead or contribute substantially to the preparation of peer-reviewed publications arising from collaborative research. The postholder will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development of future research funding proposals and develop their own independent fellowship applications.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in igneous petrology, volcano logy, geochemistry, or related geoscientific discipline and will have experience in quantitative textural or microstructural analysis of igneous rocks. Substantial experience in EBSD sample preparation, data acquisition, processing and interpretation is essential. The role may involve collaboration with internal (i.e., MuVIS X-ray Imaging Centre) and external analytical facilities and hence require ability to travel within the UK.
The role will be based at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. The School of Ocean and Earth Science offers a vibrant and internationally recognised research environment, offering excellent opportunities for networking and collaboration across volcano logy, petrology, geochemistry, and environmental geosciences.
Hybrid working and flexible working patterns are permitted for this position, provided a work schedule is agreed in advance with Dr Mangler.
