Overview
We have an exciting opportunity at the University of Southampton for a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to work within a highly skilled team. We operate our own workshop to carry out on-site repairs, including milling, turning, and welding. The role supports planned and reactive maintenance of mechanical systems across the University estate to keep facilities operational. Training and development are available to support future ambitions.
The role involves working across a range of mechanical plant including HVAC, BMS, Boilers, Chillers, Cooling Towers, Ancillary Systems, and CHP District Networks. The University’s estate includes specialist laboratories, clean rooms, research facilities, and various campus buildings requiring reliable maintenance services.
You will need excellent technical and communication skills, with the ability to plan and manage your own workload. A positive, proactive problem-solving approach and the ability to work in a team are essential to ensure work is delivered on time and to a high standard.
The successful candidate will hold a City and Guilds qualification and/or minimum NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent discipline and have completed a Mechanical apprenticeship or similar training. Familiarity with Health & Safety legislation, risk assessments, method statements, and their application to planned and reactive maintenance is required. Experience of maintenance in a commercial or similar environment is preferred.
A full driving license and participation in an out-of-hours call-out rota are required.
- Plan and execute both planned and reactive maintenance on mechanical systems across the University estate.
- Carry out on-site repairs and servicing in the workshop, including milling, turning, and welding.
- Collaborate within a team to ensure work is delivered on time and to a high standard.
- Adhere to Health & Safety policies, conduct risk assessments and prepare method statements as appropriate.
- City and Guilds qualification and/or NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Completed a Mechanical apprenticeship or related training program.
- Experience in maintenance within a commercial environment.
- Full driving license and availability for out-of-hours call-out rota.
