Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust Consultant Anaesthetist

The closing date is 26 March 2026

We are delighted to invite applications for Consultant Anaesthetist posts at Southend Hospital, part of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

These are permanent, 10-PA contracts
, with the option to take on up to 2 additional PAs by agreement with the Clinical Director. The successful applicants will join either the 1:16 general on-call rota or the 1:7 weekend trauma rota
, contributing to our robust out-of-hours service.

Southend Hospital is a dynamic and expanding cancer treatment centre, offering an exceptionally diverse and complex surgical workload. Our theatres support a wide range of specialties including major complex urology (robotic-assisted and laparoscopic), gynae‑oncology, colorectal, breast, trauma & orthopaedics, ENT, oral surgery, interventional pain, and general surgery.

We welcome candidates with a broad general anaesthetic interest and encourage individuals who are motivated to shape and enhance the future of our services. These posts have arisen following retirements within the department and offer excellent opportunities to develop subspecialty interests, contribute to service improvement, and play an active role in a large, forward‑thinking anaesthetic team.

The appointed consultants will join a supportive directorate of 23 Consultants and 18 Specialty Doctors, working collaboratively to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred care across the hospital.

  • Undertake elective and emergency theatre sessions as part of a job plan developed to reflect both service needs and individual areas of interest.
  • Pursue and develop subspecialty interests, with opportunities available across a wide spectrum of surgical and perioperative care.
  • Contribute to service improvement, innovation, and development initiatives within the department and Trust.
  • Engage in teaching, training, and supervision of junior doctors, anaesthetic trainees, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Work collaboratively within a large consultant body to ensure high clinical standards, continuity of care, and a positive patient experience.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities, including audit, guideline development, incident review, and quality improvement.
  • Maintain full compliance with revalidation requirements and uphold professional standards in line with GMC guidance.
