MSE are looking for an experienced Band 6 Paediatric Nurse to work in the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) at Southend, who is committed to the delivery of compassionate high‑quality care. The PAU is an 8‑bedded area that caters for children aged 0‑16. Children are referred for clinical assessment and/or treatment of medical conditions from varied sources. In liaison with the Unit Manager and fellow Band 6 nurses, the nurse will lead and coordinate a dedicated team of nursing and support staff in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of paediatric care for the children and young people who attend the PAU from their initial attendance through to discharge or admission to the inpatient ward.
The Band 6 nurse assists the Manager and fellow staff in the provision and maintenance of a seamless service and highest‑quality care to patients in accordance with Clinical Governance. The nurse collaboratively functions as part of a multi‑disciplinary team within the Paediatric Department, working within the Trust's policies and procedures. The nurse is expected to work with and support the Paediatric Directorate as a whole, including the Paediatric Outpatient Department, Neptune Children's Ward and the Emergency Department.
MainDuties
- Lead a shift team to assess, plan and evaluate safe and competent family‑centred care to babies, children and teenagers throughout the assessment unit.
- Work as part of the multidisciplinary team ensuring the delivery of a high standard of holistic, individualized nursing care.
- Maintain a clean working environment and adhere to infection control policies, procedures and guidelines, and use hand hygiene practices at all times.
- Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and hospital policies, and participate in relevant aspects of the Governance process.
- Continue to develop own capabilities and nursing knowledge in line with the Trust's career pathway, supported by ongoing education.
- Maintain an up‑to‑date evidence portfolio.
- Work shift patterns including weekends, nights and bank holidays.

Person Specification Qualifications- Current NMC registration – RSCN
- Evidence of recent Continuous Professional Development
- Paediatric assessment course or relevant experience in acute care
- Leadership course
- EPALS/PILS
- Experience as a senior nurse with appropriate advanced nursing skills
- Understanding of principles of Clinical Governance (Risk Management & Audit)
- Ability to manage the unit in the absence of the Ward Manager
- Experience as Acting Band 6/Nurse in Charge
- Experience of conflict management
- Experience working in a Paediatric Assessment/Ambulatory Care Facility
- Flexibility to work in other areas of the Paediatric Department and MSE when/if required
