Responsibilities

An employee is responsible for effectively responding to fire, rescue, first aid, and related emergencies; participating in daily drills, protecting life and property; maintaining equipment, apparatus and buildings; performing routine housekeeping of fire station facilities, grounds, and equipment; participating in training activities; and other work as assigned.

Employees must be available for 24‑hour shift and on‑call status as required, and may assist with emergency medical care and related duties. Operation of E.M.S. equipment, evaluation and treatment of patients in medical emergencies, and maintenance of EMS and firefighting skills, including the Paramedic License, throughout tenure within the City of Southfield.

Qualifications
  • Must have or be in school for a State of Michigan Paramedic License at the time of application and possess the license before date of hire.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen; 18 years of age or older; possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the position with or without accommodations.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license and a good driving record as determined by the City’s Driving Standards.
  • No felony convictions and no record of serious misdemeanor convictions.
  • Successfully pass or provide proof of passing a Physical Ability Test (CPAT or OPAT) within the last 1 year by date of hire.
  • Current passing score of at least 70% on Empco test and have the City of Southfield Fire Department selected in your profile.
Selection Process

Applicants must complete the City of Southfield application, a review of qualifications, driving record and criminal history check, a written examination, and an oral board interview. Candidates will undergo an extensive background investigation, a psychological evaluation, and a physical exam before employment. Each step must be passed before moving to the next.

Applicants must maintain all minimum requirements and certifications while awaiting consideration. Successful candidates remain eligible for consideration for one year from placement on the eligibility list.
