About the Role
Our client is seeking a skilled Geotechnical Engineer to provide expert advice and support for their underground mining operations in the Soweto region. This role is crucial for assessing ground stability, designing ground support systems, and ensuring the safety of personnel and infrastructure within the mine workings. You will analyze geological data, conduct site investigations, and develop geotechnical models to mitigate risks associated with rock mechanics.
This position offers the chance to apply advanced geotechnical principles in a challenging mining environment.
- Conduct geotechnical assessments of rock mass conditions in underground mining environments.
- Design and recommend appropriate ground support systems (e.g., rock bolts, mesh, shotcrete) for various mining conditions.
- Analyze monitoring data (e.g., extensometers, convergence measurements) to assess ground behavior.
- Perform numerical modeling and analysis of underground excavations using geotechnical software.
- Provide technical guidance to mine planning and operations teams on geotechnical issues.
- Assist in the development and implementation of geotechnical monitoring programs.
- Investigate ground-related incidents and recommend preventative measures.
- Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related field with a geotechnical focus.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, specifically within the underground mining industry.
- Strong understanding of rock mechanics, slope stability, and mine seismicity.
- Proficiency in geotechnical analysis and modeling software (e.g., FLAC, Phase2, Map3D).
- Experience with field investigations and instrumentation installation.
- Excellent analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex geological and geotechnical data.
- Competitive salary and performance-based remuneration.
- Comprehensive medical aid and retirement fund benefits.
- Opportunities for professional development and specialized geotechnical training.
- A collaborative and safety-focused work culture within the mining sector.
- Direct contribution to the safety and efficiency of underground mining operations.
