About us

National Grid Ventures is at the forefront of the UK's transition to a cleaner, more secure energy future. Our Interconnectors business owns and operates world-class HVDC assets that connect the UK's electricity network with neighbouring countries, helping to balance energy supply, increase resilience and support the growth of renewable generation. We're looking for a Senior Engineer to join our Operations team at Viking Link, one of the UK's most significant energy infrastructure projects.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a lead role in maintaining and improving critical assets that enable the flow of power between the UK and Europe.

About the role

As a Senior Engineer, you'll play a key role in ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Viking Link converter station and associated assets. This role will be full-time on site based in our Spalding Bicker Fen Converter Station.

You'll lead maintenance and asset improvement activities, provide technical expertise across a range of electrical and mechanical systems, and support the delivery of our operational and safety objectives. Working closely with technicians, contractors and stakeholders, you'll help drive high standards of asset performance, compliance and operational excellence.

This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of engineering projects, support outage planning and delivery, and contribute to the ongoing development of our people, systems and assets.

What you'll do
  • Leading maintenance, fault-finding, testing and commissioning activities across critical infrastructure assets.
  • Acting as a technical expert and project lead for asset improvement and refurbishment projects.
  • Supervising contractors and technicians to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and in line with business requirements.
  • Supporting the development and mentoring of operational teams, including progression towards Authorised Person and Senior Authorised Person authorisations.
  • Establishing and maintaining safe systems of work and ensuring compliance with National Grid safety rules and procedures.
  • Supporting outage planning and delivery to maximise asset availability and performance.
  • Working collaboratively with internal teams, service providers and external stakeholders.
  • Participating in standby and emergency call-out activities as part of the operational team.
What you'll need
  • Experience working within a high-voltage environment or similarly complex operational setting.
  • HNC in an Engineering discipline, a recognised engineering apprenticeship, NVQ in an Electrical discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading teams and coordinating activities within an operational environment.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, including maintenance, fault investigation and repair.
  • Experience supervising contractors and technical teams, ensuring high standards of safety, quality and performance.
  • A good understanding of health, safety and environmental legislation and the ability to establish and maintain safe systems of work.
  • Experience delivering engineering projects and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and lead others.
  • The ability to make sound decisions and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • A full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • Senior Authorised Person (SAP) authorisation, or be working towards SAP status.
  • Experience working on HVDC assets, substations or critical infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of operational technology, control systems, protection systems, station power, HVAC or associated plant.
  • IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
  • Institute of Asset Management (IAM) Certificate
