PAY FOR POSITION: 2025-26 Salary - Level 5, $23.03/hour

Important Information

NOTE: To be considered for an interview for the Substitute Instructional Para educator position, you must meet the following federal, minimum employment requirements.

  • Must be 18 years of age; and
  • Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
Description

This position’s responsibilities are to assist certificated staff with instructional and non-instructional activities for mainstream and/or special education students, including instructing students individually and/or in small groups, monitoring and documenting student behavior and/or progress, and supervising student activities.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Director of Human Resources; in addition, will report to school principal building administrator(s)/receive guidance from certificated staff while substituting at specific locations.

MENTAL DEMANDS

May Experience/be Required To

  • Frequent interruptions;
  • Deal with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities;
  • Deal with a wide range of physical or emotional disabilities;
  • Deal with distraught or difficult students.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

May Potentially Be/need To

  • Exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students;
  • Exposed to student noise levels;
  • Required to lift and position students and their special equipment such as wheelchairs;
  • Required to work in non-routine positions for extended periods;
  • Required to attend to students’ personal hygiene;
  • Exposed to biting behavior;
  • Take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids;
  • Exposed to inclement weather/working outdoors for activity/playground supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFITCATIONS

Education And Experience

  • Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, with experience working with school age children and special needs students preferred;
  • Non-violent crisis intervention, development and use of PECS, visual schedule systems, and visual supports, use of Social Stories, universal precautions and toilet teacher for special needs, understanding of child development and the needs of students on the Autism spectrum, and sensory processing preferred.

Knowledge of/ Skills in

  • Basic subject areas, such as reading, writing, and communicating
  • Variety of behavior and learning disorders.
  • Student safety rules and procedures.
Ability to

  • Deal with students in a warm and confident manner.
  • Remain flexible in changes in assignments
  • Organize activities.
  • Follow and give instructions.
  • Be fair and consistent when working with students.
  • Learn and use effective behavior management techniques.
  • Learn and use effective instructional techniques.
  • Learn to use district=supported technology for student instruction and record keeping.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.
Licenses/Special Requirements

  • Fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
  • Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan.
  • May be required to obtain first aid and CPR certification.
