Position details

This position is for 8 hours per day at 176 days per year. Pay for position: PSE Salary Schedule Level 10 – $29.99 per hour. This position works 5 days on and 5 days off. Hours are 9:30 PM to 5:30 AM. District vehicle provided.

Passage of a pre‑employment physical and testing is required (district assumes the cost).

General Summary

This position's responsibilities are to patrol school property and respond to incidents pertaining to the safety and protection of district students, staff, and property.

Essential Functions

  • Patrol areas in and around schools and district buildings as needed; confront trespassers as necessary; assist in the intervention of individuals who are committing or suspected of committing crimes on district property.
  • Respond to overnight alarm calls during assigned shifts. Respond to weekend alarm calls received at any time of the day if assigned a weekend shift.
  • Respond to calls pertaining to the safety and protection of district staff and property.
  • Maintain clear and concise logs of all nightly occurrences including suspicious activity, property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences.
  • Notify local law enforcement or fire department in cases of emergency such as fire, presence of unauthorized persons, or burglary. Immediately report such occurrences to supervisor.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner, including safely operating a district vehicle.
  • Create and complete reports accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain confidential information as appropriate.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with district staff, administration, and outside agencies.

Other Functions

  • Operate cellular phone and drive a district vehicle.
  • May serve on various district and/or departmental work teams. Model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays when they fall on assigned shifts.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to Risk Manager. Receives coordination and guidance from the Risk Manager.

Mental Demands

Confrontational situations require constant awareness and attention to personal safety; represent the district on potentially controversial matters; deal with distraught or difficult individuals; may be required to meet deadlines for submitting incident documentation.

Physical Demands

Requires visual concentration and physical dexterity; require to stand or sit for prolonged periods; require to work outdoors in inclement weather; exposed to confrontational situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and experience:

one (1) year of experience in law enforcement or security field preferred. Training or experience in security patrols, de‑escalation techniques, and observation report preferred; training or experience working with diverse racial, ethnic and cultural groups preferred.

Skill in communicating with individuals and groups of all ages, backgrounds, and educational levels. Ability to maintain control of tense and potentially dangerous situations. Skill in proper use of security equipment. Knowledge of investigatory techniques preferred. Skill in monitoring security and safety. Ability to make effective, quick decisions. Ability to perceive security and safety breaches. Ability to assess emergency situations. Ability to remain calm under pressure.

Ability to accurately document activities and occurrences. Ability to communicate security and safety procedures to district staff and students. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to function effectively in a multi‑ethnic and culturally diverse environment. Skill in listening and evaluating information. Ability to establish and maintain strong and effective working relationships with a culturally diverse population or staff, students, public, and law enforcement personnel.
