Overview

Position Title: Theater Technical Coordinator

Immediate Supervisor: Theater Services Manager

Work Schedule: 40 hours weekly, varies for events

Position Status: Hourly/ Non-Exempt Position

Position Overview:

The Technical Coordinator (TC) is responsible for the maintenance, oversight, and technical operations of CCC’s Theater. These responsibilities will include the oversight of the theater’s presentations and projects, all backstage and back of house personnel, equipment, operations, lighting, sound, and coordinating necessary maintenance. During periods when the services of the TC are not required in the theater, their services will be used in the maintenance and usage of technical equipment in other areas of CCC.

The TC reports to the Theater Services Manager.

Due to the high volume and complexity of the Chapman Cultural Center theater operations and the need to carefully coordinate the activities of both resident partner agencies and outside renters, the TC must demonstrate a significant degree of both technical expertise and diplomatic skills to properly manage the use of the theater on a daily basis and maintain a standard of excellence.

TC is responsible for the efficient and safe operation of CCC Theater facilities and equipment.

Description of Work / Primary Job Factors

  • Technical Coordinator
    :
    Control all backstage activity; accommodating, but in control of, backstage; total oversight of backstage. Supervises the operation of all equipment, protects all equipment. Schedules set-up of stage as needed (orchestra shell, pit lift, stage floor, etc.). Prepare and maintains an up-to-date listing of the technical specs of the theater, including all dimensions and all available equipment (curtains, sound, lighting, etc.).

    Works with Event Rental Coordinator and House Manager to coordinate all facility usage.
  • Support of CCC-Sponsored events
    :
    Serve as technical director for all CCC-sponsored events and other events as facility schedule dictates. Work with Event Coordinator to review and approve in a timely manner all contract technical riders for all CCC-sponsored productions.
  • Support of Partner Events
    :
    Serves as the main technical contact with the partner agency and the Chapman Cultural Center on all theater-related issues/troubleshooting.
  • Support of rental events
    :
    Serves as the main technical contact between the renter and the Chapman Cultural Center. Coordinates and implements the organization of backstage to renters. Oversees rental contract negotiations and explains the capabilities of the theater and available equipment. Coordinates with visiting technical directors.
  • Facility maintenance and upkeep
    :
    Performs preventative maintenance on all theater equipment when capable. Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all backstage and dressing room equipment, when possible. Submits all complex or advance maintenance requests to Facilities Director and notifies Theater Services Manager. Maintains an inventory of all pieces of stage equipment and all furnishing and equipment in dressing rooms and green room. Insures the proper disposal of all theater-produced trash.

    Advises Theater Services Manager on major capital improvements for this facility.
  • Crew recruitment and training
    :
    Responsible for all technical crew and approves visiting technical crews. Teaches interns and other crew regarding technical operations.
Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Theater Production, Sound Engineering, Lighting, or Media Arts
  • Supplementary three to five years of work related experience with training in technical theater and/or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Must be able to work flexible hours on nights and weekends
  • Knowledge of technical operations, methods, materials, practices and procedures involved in theater operation
  • Technical Theatre skills: sound, lighting, stagecraft; management of stage crews
  • Knowledge of signal flows, microphone patching, and cable running processes
