Patient Access Specialist – Center for Urology
Join Veterans in Healthcare to support patient experience at Spartanburg Medical Center. Position is full time M‑TH 8 AM‑5 PM & F 8 AM‑12 PM.
Location: Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The Patient Access Specialist receives, coordinates, and implements the initial patient experience by providing essential functions required for proper clinical treatment, billing and reimbursement, patient satisfaction, and efficient handling of the patient registration process.
Core Job Responsibilities- Assists with onboarding of new associates.
- Cross‑training of current associates.
- Conducts comprehensive pre‑registration for specified departments/modalities.
- Accurately completes quality registration in the HIS system, maintaining integrity of demographic and financial information.
- Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations and system policies regarding accurate and ethical registration practices.
- Reviews and ensures all medical orders meet government and hospital guidelines and clinical protocols.
- Performs clinical screening for specified modalities to ensure patient safety.
- Obtains insurance eligibility and benefit information via phone, RTE, or web to provide patients with estimated responsibility.
- Manages all patient and claim edits for accuracy and compliance with government and commercial carriers.
- Works as a liaison with the Centralized Referral Center or assigned entity to secure prior‑authorizations and prevent denials.
- Processes patient payments and maintains accurate cash drawer and reconciliation functions.
- Practices AIDET and all patient‑related encounters.
- Performs other duties assigned by department supervisor or manager.
- High school diploma or equivalency.
- Minimum three years’ experience in healthcare access and/or customer service.
- Experience with financial analysis of insurance benefits for upfront collections.
- Knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD‑10 codes.
- Excellent understanding of insurance and medical terminology.
- Solid Microsoft Office skills, focusing on Excel and Word.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Business or Healthcare related field.
- Minimum four years of experience in healthcare access or customer service.
- Minimum one year of experience in a financial environment.
- Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) or Certified Medical Insurance Specialist (CMIS).
