Hours:
M, T, Th, F 7:50 AM – 2:35 PM; W 8:20 AM – 2:35 PM.
The Para educator (Special Education) provides support and assistance in meeting the instructional, educational, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students receiving special education services. The duties may vary based on the specific assignment and may change based on administration or teacher reevaluation of student or program.
Essential Functions- Support teachers in meeting instructional, educational, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students with disabilities.
- Provide instructional support in small or large group settings to reinforce learning objectives.
- Assist with observing, recording data, charting behavior, and classroom preparation.
- Follow plans, procedures, strategies, or tasks as directed by an administrator or certificated staff.
- Follow district policies for health, safety, and well-being of children.
- Assist in maintaining safety and order in common areas (cafeteria, playground, corridors, study areas, gym, auditorium, locker rooms, parking lots, crosswalks, detention rooms, buses).
- Understand and apply behavior management plans of classrooms and programs.
- Assist in crisis intervention following a student’s individual behavior plan or ERP as written by the IEP team.
- Provide information requested by teachers/administrators for development of the IEP.
- Collaborate with Special Education teacher, classroom teachers, and other para educators.
- Assist in material preparation as needed in the lesson plan.
- Learn and apply approaches/strategies for working with students in instructional settings.
- Demonstrate interest in working with students, including those with special needs; encourage and model expected behavior.
- May assist in data collection on student mastery of behavior goals/objectives using established criteria or checklists.
- Fade supports to individual students as directed; document fading of supports per student IEP.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with students; maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Toilet/diaper and feed students, if necessary; may include tube feeding or catheterization.
- Work cooperatively with all members of the school community; communicate with Special Education teachers regarding student progress and support plans.
- Maintain organized documentation and records; participate in ongoing training to enhance skills.
- Perform basic computer tasks (word processing, email) and respond promptly to duty requirements.
- Remain flexible to changes in assignments; work independently with minimal supervision.
- Provide first aid as needed and report accidents to the building office.
- Perform other duties as directed by the building principal.
– Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current first aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain promptly.
Para educators shall be required to be highly qualified upon hire into a continuing position as defined by state law. Qualifications may include one of the following:
- Completed at least 2 years of college study (72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100-level or higher); OR
- Associate degree or higher; OR
- Passed ETS Para Pro Praxis (minimum score 455); OR
- Passed Master Teacher Assessments (two assessments, minimum 65%); OR
- Completed and passed Pearson Paraprofessional assessment; OR
- Completed an apprenticeship as a para educator registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
- Strong written and verbal communication with staff and students.
- Warm and confident approach when working with students.
- Knowledge of student safety rules and procedures; ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Prior experience with students with disabilities preferred.
Typical work requires lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, standing, walking, sitting, and some stooping or kneeling. May involve exposure to health risks and infections carried by students. Reasonable…
