Job Title:
Hardware Designer and Drafter - REMOTE
The Hardware Designer and Drafter creates precise technical drawings, 3D models, and labels for in-house hardware products, with a strong focus on robotic and automation systems. This role receives work assignments through an internal ticketing system and collaborates closely with engineering teams and stakeholders to deliver accurate, high-quality design documentation. The position supports product development across mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical systems and requires both independent work and effective teamwork in a fast-paced engineering environment.
Responsibilities- Create detailed 2D drawings, 3D models, and labels for in-house hardware products, including robotic and automation systems.
- Produce drawings and models for mechanical components such as machine components, castings, sheet metal parts, and plastic parts.
- Draft Printed Circuit Board (PCB) mechanical assembly layouts that capture the placement of mechanical components including connectors, buttons, and displays.
- Design comprehensive cable assembly documentation, including routing, connector specifications, and clear assembly instructions.
- Deliver high-quality design artifacts such as component drawings, assembly drawings, and complete Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Apply drafting standards, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), consistently to all drawings and documentation.
- Author and process Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and other change orders to support product updates and revisions.
- Maintain and update Bills of Materials (BOMs) across product lines to ensure accurate and current component information.
- Manage design data within Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems to ensure robust version control and document integrity.
- Use Solid Works to perform 3D modeling and assembly design, ensuring designs meet functional and manufacturability requirements.
- Use AutoCAD to produce accurate 2D drafting outputs that align with engineering and manufacturing needs.
- Leverage Microsoft Office and other standard office software tools to prepare documentation, reports, and communication materials.
- Follow established ECO and BOM processes and adhere to change management workflows.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications to create and update design documentation.
- Incorporate knowledge of manufacturing processes for mechanical components, including castings, sheet metal, plastic parts, and electromechanical assemblies, into design work.
- Manage multiple concurrent design assignments through the internal ticketing or work order management system and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ask clarifying questions, gather sufficient information, and refine requirements before and during design work.
- Work independently on assigned tasks while contributing effectively to team-based projects and reviews.
- Ensure all deliverables are accurate, complete, and aligned with established quality standards and engineering best practices.
- At least 5 years of experience creating mechanical drawings and models for electromechanical or robotic systems.
- At least 5 years of experience producing PCB mechanical assembly documentation.
- At least 5 years of experience designing and documenting cable assemblies.
- Proficiency in Solid Works for 3D modeling and assembly design.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drafting.
- Experience using Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems for design data and document management.
- Working knowledge of Engineering Change Order (ECO) and Bill of Materials (BOM) processes and change management workflows.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Strong knowledge of drafting standards, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes for mechanical components, including castings, sheet metal parts, plastic parts, and electromechanical assemblies.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask across multiple concurrent assignments and prioritize work effectively.
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and completeness in all deliverables.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaborate effectively within a team.
- Ability to ask targeted questions and gather sufficient information from stakeholders before and during design work.
