Position Summary
Under the Nursing Leadership direct supervision, the RN provides comprehensive nursing care to patients with complex medical, neurodevelopmental and psychiatric health needs in accordance with the laws governing nursing practice.
Job-specific Responsibilities- Ensures that the scope of duties and services provided is consistent and within the state nursing practice guidelines.
- Assesses patients' physical and mental health status through comprehensive nursing assessments, including medical history review, vital signs monitoring, and mental status examinations.
- Implements individualized nursing care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, addressing both medical and psychiatric needs, and ensuring a therapeutic milieu.
- Implements and enforces facility policies and procedures to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
- Administers medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions according to physician orders and established protocols, ensuring accuracy, safety, and efficacy within the unit.
- Monitors patients' response to treatments and medications and evaluates for any adverse reactions, side effects, and changes in condition.
- Performs nursing procedures and interventions such as wound care, IV therapy, catheterization, administration of emergency psychiatric medications and restraint management.
- Utilizes milieu management strategies to promote a structured, supportive, and therapeutic environment within the unit, providing direction and leadership to floor staff, engaging in de-escalation techniques with patients, and promoting positive interactions among patients and staff.
- Collaborates with psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate integrated medical and psychiatric services.
- Completes all required documentation in a timely manner, including assessments, interventions, daily summaries, care plans, and risk assessments.
- Proficient in ensuring prompt recognition of any untoward change in patient condition and facilitating appropriate nursing, medical or other intervention.
- Effectively communicates with patients, families, physicians, and team members.
- Checks timesheet daily at the end of shift to correct timesheets on an ongoing basis and approves timecards at the end of the pay period.
- Accesses and checks webmail each shift when working to stay informed of current events.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.
- Preferred minimum of at least one (1) year of experience in the acute/post-acute or pediatric setting and previous psychiatric nursing experience.
- Maintain current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State performing duties.
- Certified in BLS upon hire date.
- Certified in ACLS and PALS with forty-five (45) days of hire date.
- Patient de-escalation training (SAMA) is required within 30 days of hire.
- Maintains certifications and licenses as current to avoid voluntary resignation.
