Principal Systems/Software Engineer | Embedded Linux Firmware
Join HPE’s team as a Principal Systems/Software Engineer focusing on Embedded Linux Firmware. This hybrid role requires an average of two days per week from an HPE office.
Job DescriptionDesigns, develops, troubleshoots and debugs software programs for software enhancements and new products. Develops software including operating systems, compilers, routers, networks, utilities, databases and Internet-related tools. Determines hardware compatibility and/or influences hardware design.

Responsibilities- Develops organization-wide architectures and methodologies for software systems design and development across multiple platforms and organizations within the Global Business Unit.
- Identifies and evaluates new technologies, innovations, and outsourced development partner relationships for alignment with technology roadmap and business value; creates plans for integration and update into architecture.
- Reviews and evaluates designs and project activities for compliance with development guidelines and standards; provides tangible feedback to improve product quality and mitigate failure risk.
- Leverages recognized domain expertise, business acumen, and experience to influence decisions of executive business leadership, outsourced development partners, and industry standards groups.
- Provides guidance and mentoring to less‑experienced staff members to set an example of software systems design and development innovation and excellence.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent.
- Typically 10+ years experience.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills; experienced in participating on and leading multi‑disciplinary technical teams.
- Proven experience in software system architecture, including translating product/system requirements into software and hardware design requirements/specifications.
- Deep expertise in embedded Linux and Thread
X RTOS systems development on microcontrollers and SoCs (ARM, PIC); experience with Yocto Linux preferred. - Expertise in Linux system programming; advanced Linux debugging required.
- Skilled in programming using communication protocols including Ethernet, CAN, I2C, SPI, etc. including experience with associated device driver development.
- Knowledge of contemporary secure software development considerations and practices; experience with applied use of cryptography.
- Mastery in C programming; proficiency in C++, Python, and Linux shell scripting.
- Experience with Git/Git Hub for source control and collaboration.
- Effective technical leadership in inclusive, team‑oriented environments.
- Experience mentoring and aligning development team with identified architectural and design goals.
- Ability to work cross‑functionally with product management, hardware, and software teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; capable of driving consensus through clear technical presentations.
- Ability to present technical concepts, drive consensus, and negotiate design options with business unit and executive stakeholders.
- Fluent in English.
