Collections Tax Specialist I (Revenue Tax Specialist I)
Join the Illinois Department of Revenue as a Collections Tax Specialist I (Revenue Tax Specialist I). This role manages delinquent tax collections, communicates with taxpayers, and ensures compliance with Illinois tax laws. The position is union‑approved and supports Springfield Collection Enforcement.
Position OverviewAssist taxpayers and representatives with delinquent tax issues by phone and in person, provide guidance on compliance, and manage collection actions including levies, wage garnishments, and license revocations.
Essential Functions- Confers by telephone, correspondence, or in person with taxpayers and representatives to demand payment or filing of missing returns.
- Receives, reviews, and analyzes routine state and out‑of‑state accounts, determining appropriate collection actions.
- Uses Gen Tax and other PC systems to access delinquent cases.
- Prepares and prints remittance documents and directs liability to proper account period.
- Recommends courses of action to taxpayers, higher‑level staff, and managers to resolve cases.
- Serves as a member of project teams, assisting with studies and automation of procedures.
- Confers with supervisor regarding updates in tax laws and regulatory material.
- Compiles and prepares weekly, monthly, and special management reports.
- Assists in processing more complex tax account cases as part of on‑the‑job training.
- Performs other duties as required.
Successful completion of the Revenue Tax Specialist Trainee program (12 months of agency training) and either: a four‑year college degree equivalent in knowledge, skill, and mental development, or four years of work experience providing tax‑related support functions within the Illinois Department of Revenue.
Conditions of Employment- Successful completion of a tax compliance and fingerprint‑based background check.
- Medium work (lifting no more than 50 pounds, frequent lifting or carrying of objects up to 25 pounds).
- Ability to use and secure a state‑issued mobile device (cellular phone, laptop, tablet).
The Illinois Department of Revenue administers the state's tax laws and collects taxes in a fair, consistent, and efficient manner, ensuring accurate and timely funding for state and local communities.
