Essential Functions- Perform processing inspections in state and/or federal plants on a variety of fresh, smoked, cured, or cooked meat and poultry products.
- Conduct antemortem and postmortem inspections of animals and poultry in state and/or federal plants.
- Inspect processing procedures in plants daily for proper product formulations and labeling.
- Submit product samples for laboratory analysis to determine compliance with laws and regulations.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Completion of high school education (preferably with courses in algebra, biology, or chemistry).
- Successful completion of an agency‑approved meat and poultry inspection training program.
- Completion of a name‑based background screening and self‑disclosure of criminal history.
- Pass a pre‑employment physical examination.
- Ability to travel as required; possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Availability for overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last‑minute overtime; willingness to work evenings and weekends.
- This position is considered light work; lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Walking, standing, and occasional pushing or pulling of arm or leg controls may be required.
- Residency in one of the following counties:
Ogle, Winnebago, Boone, DeKalb, or Lee. - Calibrated exposure tolerance to unpleasant odors in slaughterhouses and meat preparation areas, extreme cold in meat lockers, and heat in processing areas.
- Use of safety practices around dangerous meat cutting and processing machinery.
