Job Overview

Journeyman - Sheet Metal at Premi Star, Springfield, IL. This role installs and maintains HVAC systems including boilers, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, hydronic units, and accessories. Report to the Service Manager.

• Inspect and test HVAC systems for compliance with plans and specifications or to detect and locate malfunctions.
• Determine customer concerns with applied HVAC systems.
• Comply with all applicable standards, policies, and procedures, including safety procedures and workplace cleanliness.
• Discuss heating/cooling system malfunctions with customers to isolate problems or verify resolution.
• Record and report faults, deficiencies, and other unusual occurrences, as well as time and materials expended on work orders.
• Test joints or connections for leaks.
• Adjust system controls to manufacturer‑recommended settings to balance the system.
• Install auxiliary components such as expansion and discharge valves, air ducts, pipes, blowers, dampers, flues, and stokers following blueprints.
• Assist with other work in coordination with repair and maintenance teams.
• Install, connect, and adjust thermostats, humidists, and timers.
• Generate work orders addressing deficiencies in need of correction.
• Connect pipes or tubing to equipment and to fuel, water, or refrigerant source, forming complete circuits.
• Assemble, position, and mount heating or cooling equipment following blueprints.

• High School diploma or equivalent and at least 5 years of HVAC level operation, maintenance & repair experience in the HVAC and refrigeration trade.

• Knowledge of HVAC repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques, electrical circuits and wiring, operating principles of motors, and local electrical codes.
• Effective communication with internal team and customers.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Diagnose and resolve problems, read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material, and perform math.
• Proficiency in using hand and power tools.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including electronic and diagnostic tools, recovery equipment, and various HVAC equipment. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. The position requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.

Physical demands are at medium work levels.

Operates primarily alone on HVAC and boiler equipment in all environments, including extreme cold or heat depending on the time of year. Vehicles are used as the base of operations.
