Overview

Social Studies teacher responsible for delivering middle school history/social studies content, creating a safe and inclusive classroom, and supporting diverse learners. Collaborate with colleagues, assess student progress, and engage in professional development with a focus on equity and anti-racism.

Responsibilities
  • Create a safe, purposeful classroom environment that prioritizes learning for all students
  • Collaborate with other teachers, instructional leaders, and partners to ensure instruction meets the needs of all students
  • Assess students regularly, analyze data, and determine appropriate next steps for instruction
  • Ensure instruction meets the needs of all students, including students with special needs, English Language Learners, and students performing below grade level
  • Build relationships and communicate regularly with students and their families to solicit input and share academic progress
  • Engage in learning about issues of racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion in education; reflect on biases and plan culturally responsive instruction
  • Participate in regular professional development opportunities before and during the school year
Qualifications
  • Experience teaching History/Social Studies at the middle and/or high school level preferred
  • Appropriate content/program area (History/Social Science) and grade level license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education required
  • Educators who are not licensed in the appropriate area may be eligible for a licensure waiver and are encouraged to apply
  • Experience as an active anti-racist or advocate for equity preferred
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Benefits

SEZP offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience; salaries for new teachers start at $57,396. Teachers qualify for benefits (sick days, retirement, health insurance, etc.).

There may be opportunities to increase earnings above base salary, including signing or relocation bonuses, Expanded Learning Time stipends, and Empowerment Academies during February, April, and summer breaks, following an application and selection process.

The Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership (SEZP) is a collaboration among Springfield Public Schools, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the Springfield Education Association to improve outcomes for students in seventeen middle and high schools. SEZP emphasizes equity and anti-racism and supports autonomous school models with school-based autonomies in curriculum, talent, calendar, schedule, and budget.
