Full-Time Shift Lead – Urgent Vet Hospitals, Springfield

Overview

Urgent Vet bridges the gap between daytime general practice and emergency/overnight care, offering after‑hours care for canine and feline patients without the additional expense of emergency clinic fees. Our hospitals provide care for common urgent cases, including wound management, ear infections, vomiting/diarrhea, and euthanasia. Each paperless clinic is designed for efficient care and equipped with cloud‑based EMR, digital X‑ray, and a full suite of IDEXX in‑house lab equipment.

Responsibilities

The Shift Lead performs the duties of a Senior Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technician (when applicable) and provides operational support across all shifts.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing veterinary assistant or technician duties
  • Providing consistent leadership during each shift to support clients and coordinate paraprofessional staff
  • Stewarding hospital leadership goals by maximizing productivity and profitability
  • Partnering with the Practice Manager and Lead DVM for effective client, team, and field leadership communication
  • Managing staff schedules, resolving bottlenecks, and training new paraprofessional staff
  • Assisting with client resolution decisions, invoice adjustments, and client experience exceptions
  • Addressing equipment issues and inventory management
  • Ensuring effective communication between staff, clients, hospital leadership, and the Support Center
  • Being present on‑site as an essential function of the role
Ideal Candidate
  • Demonstrates professionalism, dependability, healthy and positive communication skills, and the ability to multi‑task in a hands‑on environment
  • Energetic people‑and‑pet person with excellent work ethic and organizational skills
  • Willing to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Prior customer service experience
  • Prior experience working with animals in a hospital setting
  • Supporting the Practice Manager in hospital labor management, including adjusting team schedules
  • Creating an environment for delivering quality, efficient, and effective veterinary care while fostering a positive and engaging team environment
  • Ensuring effective communication between staff, clients, hospital leadership, and the Support Center
  • Assigning cases to veterinary assistants and ensuring clarity of responsibilities, identifying and resolving bottlenecks in medical operations
  • Assisting with client resolution decisions, invoice adjustments, and client experience exceptions
  • Training and mentoring new paraprofessional staff
  • Addressing broken equipment issues and assisting in inventory management
  • Performing other duties as assigned
  • Must be able to lift 40 lb
  • Will be present on‑site as an essential function of the role

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • Two years in healthcare, veterinary profession, or service‑type industry
  • Medical background with medical terminology training
  • Associate degree or veterinary technician certification/licensure preferred
  • Six months of prior experience in a management position strongly preferred
  • Animal handling experience including patient restraint, sample collection, and monitoring
  • Clinical skills including phlebotomy, catheter placement, laboratory analysis, and drug calculation
