The School Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the school’s outdoor areas to ensure a clean, safe, and attractive environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role involves landscaping, lawn care, minor outdoor repairs, seasonal maintenance, and ensuring all grounds‑related facilities are functional and well‑kept.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform routine lawn care including mowing, edging, weeding, watering, and fertilizing.
- Maintain trees, shrubs, and flower beds by pruning, trimming, and planting as needed.
- Clear walkways, parking lots, and entrances of debris, snow, and ice using appropriate tools and materials.
- Inspect and maintain playgrounds, outdoor seating areas, fences, and athletic fields.
- Operate and perform basic maintenance on landscaping equipment (e.g., mowers, trimmers, blowers).
- Dispose of yard waste and manage composting or recycling efforts.
- Perform minor outdoor repairs, such as patching walkways or replacing signage.
- Report safety hazards, needed repairs, or suspicious activity to appropriate personnel.
- Assist with setup and cleanup of outdoor school events and activities.
- Follow all safety guidelines and school policies.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Valid driver’s license
- Previous experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or related work.
- Ability to operate groundskeeping tools and equipment safely.
- Physical stamina to perform outdoor work in various weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see and use repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
Employee must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, and tolerate exposure to outdoor elements such as heat, cold, rain, etc. Employee may kneel, squat, stoop, and/or bend on an occasional to frequent basis. Must see and hear on a continuous basis as well as speak frequently. Position varies from standing, sitting, walking, etc. Occasionally, it may be necessary to move quickly, run, etc.
over smooth or uneven surfaces.
