Data Engineer
We have an exciting opportunity for a Health Data Engineer to join our future focused and rewarding organisation.
Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN is a not for profit organisation that works at a regional level to achieve improved whole of system health care.
Our key objectives are to:
- increase the efficiency and effectiveness of health services for patients—particularly those at risk of poor health outcomes, and
- improve coordination of care to ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
Our PHN achieves this by working with local health care stakeholders and community to:
- fund programs and services based on local health needs;
- support primary health care professionals, like GPs, general practice staff and allied health professionals, to improve the care they provide to their patients; and
- support the development of a local sustainable health care workforce.
The Health Data Engineer is a new role (2 year contract) and is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable data solutions to collect, integrate, and power advanced healthcare analysis and insights.
This includes working closely with key members of the Data and Digital team to ensure data security and quality, appropriate use of PHI/Azure data infrastructure using ETL/ELT tools to ultimately support improved patient outcomes, heightened understanding of the health needs of the region, and operational efficiency.
We are open to the role being undertaken by a recent graduate.
Key responsibilities of the role:- Data pipeline development: Design, build, and maintain automated, scalable, and secure data pipelines for ingesting, transforming, and loading data from various sources, like the CRM (Dynamics).
- Data modeling and architecture: Develop and optimize data models and secure data services on the PHI/Azure platform to ensure appropriate data storage, management, accuracy, and accessibility for analytics and reporting.
- Data quality and governance: Work with the Privacy Officer and Data Analysts to ensure that data quality frameworks, testing, and practices are adhered to and support the maintenance of the integrity of the data.
- Collaboration: Work across the data and digital team to support them in the delivery of data solutions that support strategic decision-making and health outcomes.
- Power BI dashboards: Assist the team in setting up Power BI dashboards and productivity tools as needed to support data-driven decision-making, and ensure the supporting data across all dashboards is well-maintained.
- Reporting and metadata management: Support the business and health intelligence functions by ensuring data dictionaries and catalogues are established and maintained.

, love to learn, and are excited about emerging tools and AI-enabled workflows - You can work with large datasets with millions of transactions per month, are comfortable to play in the grey as we bring various datasets together, and get a buzz out of creating structure where it doesn’t necessarily exist
- You care about impact
, ethics, and are meticulous in how you manage data - You love making data useful, trustworthy, and accessible
- Tertiary qualifications in disciplines such as database design, data engineering, data architecture, or related.
- Advanced proficiency working within Microsoft Azure to develop data warehouse solutions, use of Synapse and other tools, and code management (eg. Git Hub)
- Experience with Power BI reports and work spaces, including establishing efficient data models with appropriate privacy and security controls.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of, healthcare data.
- Experience working within a regulated industry sector, and operating within a robust information security (ISO
27001:2022) organisational environment. - Experience developing solutions linking diverse/discrete data sources to create a single view, where creative solutions may be required.
