Purpose Statement

The Springfield, Missouri Public School District is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Coach.

The Springfield School District is Missouri’s largest public school district and has built a reputation of academic excellence based on the outstanding performance of our students and schools. About 25,000 students attend 36 elementary schools, an intermediate school, 9 middle schools, 5 high schools, and a variety of alternative education and choice programs.

The job of Assistant Coach is done for the purpose of assisting in the designing and implementing the athletic program for the assigned sport, in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; providing supervision of other coaching personnel; providing supervision of students during all aspects of the program; using sound instructional techniques in overseeing program activities; serving as a positive role model to student athletes;

and serving as a liaison for the school and program with other schools within and outside the district, the community, and various organizations.


Essential Functions

  • Analyzes opposition's strategies for game/event prior to and/or during athletic events to assess strengths and weaknesses for developing game plans.
  • Assesses student athletes to provide feedback on performance and determine team needs.
  • Attends meetings, workshops, conferences to receive and convey information related to their role.
  • Assists with supporting activities (e.g., parent orientations, recognition events, banquets) to provide information and recognize accomplishments.
  • Develops practice regimes to enhance athletic performance, including strength, speed, agility, nutritional, and injury prevention strategies.
  • Develops game strategies to prepare teams and individual athletes.
  • Evaluates facilities and playing fields for hazards and equipment issues, recommending modifications to reduce injury risk.
  • Identifies program needs and recommends expenditures for activities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Utilizes program funding sources in compliance with policies to address program needs.
  • Implements practice schedules and manages related events for efficient operation.
  • Instructs student athletes to promote growth in athletic skills and teamwork.
  • Maintains records such as game statistics, insurance, permission forms, emergency info, schedules, and inventories to comply with requirements and report scores and strategies.
  • Monitors students' academic eligibility and provides interventions as needed to maintain eligibility.
  • Oversees student managers and volunteers, providing direction and monitoring activities.
  • Serves as the liaison at functions such as AIA meetings, tournaments, and workshops.
  • Supervises student athletes during all participation areas to ensure safety.
  • Supports students during the college recruiting process to aid in their college aspirations.

  • Other Functions

    Performs other duties as assigned by the head coach to ensure effective functioning.


    Job Requirements (Minimum Qualifications)

    Knowledge: Basic math, technical information review, persuasive communication, and situational analysis. Knowledge of community organizations, equipment, injury protocols, laws, participant guidelines, public relations, standards, and safety practices.

    Skills: Performing multiple technical tasks, upgrading skills, adapting to priorities, administering first aid, coordinating activities, organizing information, and overseeing finances.

    Ability: Scheduling activities, gathering data, working independently and with others, handling diverse groups, problem-solving, and using equipment. Also includes leadership, confidentiality, meeting deadlines, motivating students, enforcing sportsmanship, and traveling for events.


    Responsibility

    Work under limited supervision, utilizing resources from other units, with opportunities to impact organizational services.


    Experience:
    Related experience with increasing responsibility.

    Education: At least 60 college credit hours;
    Bachelor's degree preferred. MO Substitute Teaching Certification required.


    Miscellaneous Requirements

    Background clearance required.


    Work Environment & Physical Requirements

    Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. The job involves sitting, walking, and standing, with exposure to temperature extremes and risk of injury or illness.
