Description of Primary Duties
A successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of aquatic plants and algae within Missouri Ozark aquatic environments: streams, reservoirs, and wetlands. A master’s degree in a biology-related field is preferred. Candidates should understand how to collect, sample, preserve, and identify plants and algae, and they are expected to also have a strong grasp of how to use common field tools such as meters, various microscopes, and sampling equipment.
Previous teaching experience at the college-level is preferred. The instructor will need to accurately teach students to identify plants and algae in the field and lab; convey plant life history, ecology, and evolution; describe effective management practices to limit or support plant and algal growth; and indicate the ways in which plants benefit their communities and environmental conditions and how plants can be harnessed by humans to improve degraded environments.
The instructor is expected to lead their class on several field trips to nearby locations. Previous safety training in first aid and laboratory chemical safety is desired. The instructor should also know how to appropriately assess the students’ understanding of course materials through periodic quizzes, lecture exams, and lab exams throughout the semester.
