Public Safety Officer – Evangel University
Job SummaryThe Public Safety Officer maintains a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors by protecting life and property on the campus and university-owned properties; enforcing laws and campus policies and regulations; aiding in emergencies; conducting initial investigations and writing official reports; and offering general safety services to the Evangel community. The officer is armed and requires applicable certifications, trainings, and physical abilities.
Shift& Supervisors
Shift: 2nd and 3rd shift available. Days off are determined by the shift sergeant. Immediate supervisor:
Shift Sergeant and/or Lieutenant. Administrator:
Director of Public Safety.
- Protection of life and property.
- Regular foot or vehicle patrol of campus and university‑owned buildings and facilities, evaluating and responding to potential threats.
- Respond quickly to radio and mobile calls for service.
- Monitor campus cameras using computer software for proactive awareness.
- Deliver presentations, training and informational materials on safety issues to campus groups.
- Engage with the Evangel community, maintaining a positive, service‑oriented attitude.
- Enforce laws and campus policies.
- Maintain knowledge of applicable laws and department policies.
- Contact law enforcement personnel per department regulations.
- Monitor parking lots and streets for violations, issuing notices as appropriate.
- Provide assistance in emergencies (weather, fire, medical, security, natural disasters).
- Assist law enforcement, fire department, and other emergency personnel as required.
- Conduct initial investigations and write official reports.
- Investigate suspicious activity.
- Conduct room or vehicle searches when authorized.
- Administer sobriety and field tests when indicated.
- Assess situations, conduct interviews and report information.
- Prepare and file accurate reports using reporting‑writing software.
- Work closely with Student Development and other departments on security and safety needs.
- Offer general safety/security services.
- Provide safety/security escorts.
- Assist with vehicle unlocks and jump‑starts, and building unlocks for faculty or staff.
- Stay knowledgeable of current campus events to assist visitors and community members.
- Serve as a Campus Security Authority for Clery Act compliance.
- Contribute to the department and university’s success by adhering to policies and procedures.
- Character:
Christian faith supporting Evangel University and the Assemblies of God. - High personal integrity and confidentiality.
- Knowledge of security methods and procedures.
- Knowledge of campus buildings and geography.
- Computer skills.
- Mental Ability: quick reaction to emergencies; accurate observation; sound judgment; independent work; teamwork.
- Physical: vision 20/40; ability to walk and stand extended; climbing stairs; use of force as necessary; lift up to 50 lbs; minor physical labor.
- Certifications:
Firearms, Defensive Tactics, First Aid, CPR, AED. - Background: clean record with no felony or moral turpitude convictions; valid Missouri chauffeur’s license; no DUI/DWI convictions.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of related experience in safety and security operations; law enforcement or related education may be considered.
- Personal computer with Microsoft‑based and report‑writing software.
- Mobile radio.
- Public safety vehicles.
- Personal Breathalyzer Test (PBT).
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Firearms and restraining devices.
- Frequent work in extreme temperatures, outdoors.
- Extended periods of standing and walking.
- Nighttime, holiday and/or weekend work; essential position required to report for severe weather closures; overtime may be required.
