Job Summary
Assist the head coach in teaching, advising and mentoring student-athletes in accordance with NCAA, conference and university rules and regulations while creating an atmosphere where graduation is facilitated through participation in intercollegiate athletics, teaching student-athletes to be productive citizens who contribute to society for life and winning championships. The primary responsibility is teaching effectively in practice and competition with an emphasis on providing individual instruction to student-athletes.
Secondary responsibilities include recruiting, compliance, scheduling and budget management, fundraising, life skills instruction and community engagement.
- Practice and Competition Instruction – Assist with individual instruction, technique demonstration, performance evaluation, strength and conditioning, practice and competition plans, scouting and competition schedule development.
- Student-Athlete Academic Performance – Monitor academic performance, implement study hall and grade checking programs, partner with faculty and support academic limitations for underperforming student-athletes.
- Recruiting and Retention – Assist with recruiting and retaining prospective student-athletes who are admissible, NCAA qualified, good citizens and motivated to graduate.
- Compliance – Promote an atmosphere of compliance with NCAA, conference and university rules and regulations.
- Budget – Assist with management of the budget to ensure the program functions within the operating budget and any supplemental funds.
- Fundraising – Collaborate with advancement staff for fundraising events, assist with securing donations to supplement the sport operating budget as necessary.
- Student-Athlete Development – Supplement classroom education by teaching life skills, support student-athlete development programming conducted by the athletics department and university.
- Community Engagement – Promote a positive image of the program and the university through community service activities, maintain positive relations with media outlets, community groups and athletics staff.
- Sports Camps – Assist with organization and implementation of sports camps as desired.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Understanding and commitment to the fundamental role of intercollegiate athletics in educational development of student-athletes.
- Basic knowledge of the sport, coaching and instructional strategies.
- Ability to recruit and retain qualified student-athletes at an academically competitive institution.
- Knowledge of and commitment to NCAA rules.
- Professional handling of stressful situations.
- Promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program.
- Work successfully with other departments and constituency groups on campus and in the community.
- Motivate and develop student-athletes academically and athletically.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Commitment to multicultural populations and awareness of issues affecting women, minorities and international student-athletes.
- Work evening and weekend hours and travel for work-related activities.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency with computer applications and general office equipment.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Bachelor's degree.
- One year of experience teaching and coaching the sport (college coaching experience preferred).
- Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to handle or feel, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and stoop or kneel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
