Under the supervision of the Radiologist and Imaging Manager, the Nuclear Medicine Technologist will perform a wide variety of Nuclear Medicine procedures. The technologist will also perform all required all testing as required by the various governmental, and or regulatory agencies. The results of these tests will be properly documented and retained for the appropriate length of time. The technologist will be responsible for the proper ordering of the isotopes and the subsequent return to radio pharmacy of unused material.

Responsibilities
  • Operates and maintains quality control for all imaging equipment and radioactivity assaying devices in the Nuclear Medicine Department; calibrates cameras and equipment in accordance with internal protocols; verifies proper operation of equipment prior to use; checks radiation-monitoring devices and advises appropriate parties if problems are identified.
  • Prepares radio-pharmaceuticals for patient use, administers radio-pharmaceuticals to patients and performs nuclear medicine procedures; uses appropriate camera in accordance with internal protocols; ensures that sufficient supplies are on hand to perform procedures; follows safeguards and protocols to ensure quality of results.
  • Operates nuclear medicine computers to enhance the diagnostic value of information obtained from nuclear medicine procedures; follows internal protocols when processing computer studies to achieve high quality films by choice of filters, slice selection, display parameters, image intensity and labeling techniques.
  • Maintains records and logs as required by department protocols and licensure requirements; logs patient dose administered, progress notes and other pertinent data.
  • Disposes of and stores radioactive materials as required by law; stores radioactive materials/waste in appropriately labeled and shielded containers; removes radioactive and waste materials from exam rooms to proper storage or disposal location; surveys waste leaving the “hot” lab for radiation levels in excess of established standards.
  • Schedules patients for nuclear medicine examinations, questions patients and/or reviews patient charts for facts of patient history which are pertinent to interpretation of nuclear medicine examinations by the radiologist.
  • Uses sterile or aseptic technique as indicated, performs venipuncture, and administers IV contrast media, under the supervision of a radiologist and within the technologist’s scope of practice.
  • Develops and revises patient educational materials.
  • Provides staff and community education as required.
  • Assists with the development and works within comprehensive breast center budget.
  • Participates in professional growth and development opportunities by attending various meetings, conferences and courses.
  • Demonstrates awareness of patient’s needs as a total person (physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, cultural, etc.), consistent with patient’s age and development level.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows Departmental and Ohio Valley guidelines related to guest services activities in the performance of the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Adheres to and follows Ohio Valley’s policies, procedures and compliance Program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technologist program, and one year of related work experience in the field of nuclear medicine.
  • License/Certification:
    Ohio State certification as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or American Registry of Radiological Technologist (ARRT) (N).
